Good take. I appreciate your take on the fact that "Baldree gives us things and just expects us to know them," but for me it just made me feel like I wasn't in on the jokes just because I don't play DnD. I DNF'd it after too many insider assumptions, but I see from your post that this tactic works for others.

Maybe one day I'll give it another go, now that I know what I'm getting into.

I don't know anything about DnD so I'm not sure if it has anything much to do with it, but it could. However it's perfectly fine to DNF a book that doesn't sit well with you. Sometimes I can feel a part of the world without too much exposition and that is how this was for me. If having that exposition helps you immerse, I totally understand why this felt like it kept you at a distance!
